4.183 - Emergent Design Workshop | Profs. Peter Testa and Devyn Weiser

With Carlos Barrios, Melissa Edmands, Simon Greenwold, Joy Hou, Edwin Lau, and Gustavo Rodriguez

Under the direction of Peter Testa, the Emergent Design Group at MIT researches architectural morphology with a focus on the derivation of form from material properties, complex geometries, or mathematical functions. In this case, the workshop was centered around feasibility studies for a carbon-fiber based skyscraper. These initial studies dealt mostly with the properties of carbon fiber, and the unique structural and construction challenges that would be faced by a suspended building. The web pages linked to above document the term's research.
