Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius Couch and Table

Here is the old image I based the models on. It dates from the 1940's, and I felt it was a better representation than more modern images. Since the death of Walter and Ise Gropius, the house has become a public museum, and the current furniture may not reflect the original.

Here are the AutoCAD models of the couch, and the table (rollover the image).

Here are the printed models (rollover for the table). Both are printed at a 1:10 scale. Both the couch and table were printed on the Thermojet, and are wax. The couch, even though the interior is hollowed out, is very strong. The table, on the other hand, is very fragile. I cannot remove the support material from the legs since both legs would break. They are already cracked. But these models would be very useful in the design and manufacturing processes, as they can quickly and easily point out problems of scale or buildability.

Here are two additional renderings of the couch and table, experimenting with different colors and material choices. Rollover for the second choice. This illustrates the power of rendering in aiding design decisions, from color to texture and lighting.
